Xi Jinping Pledges Ongoing Crackdown on Military Corruption

(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged to maintain a rigorous campaign against corruption within the nation’s armed forces, following the removal of several senior commanders over allegations of graft and misconduct.

Xi delivered his remarks during an address to delegates from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the People’s Armed Police on Saturday.

“There must be no place in the military for those who are disloyal to the party, nor any place for corrupt elements,” he said, emphasizing the need for strict supervision in “key areas such as fund flows, the exercise of power, and quality control” as part of the country’s upcoming five-year plan scheduled for approval later this month.

After securing a third term in 2023, Xi launched a sweeping crackdown on corruption across both the armed forces and the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party. The campaign has resulted in the dismissal of numerous Central Military Commission (CMC) members and dozens of generals, and in 2023 the party expelled two former defense ministers.

Earlier this year, authorities opened an anti-graft investigation into Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of the CMC, over alleged “serious violation of discipline and law.” Reports indicate that Zhang may have been accused of leaking sensitive information about China’s nuclear program to foreign powers.

Meanwhile, the Central Intelligence Agency has reportedly intensified recruitment efforts within the PLA, releasing Chinese-language advertisements aimed at personnel with access to critical military technology. The Chinese Foreign Ministry condemned the initiative, pledging to “combat infiltration and sabotage activities of foreign anti-China forces.”
