China’s Xi Urges Countries to Abide by International Law

(MENAFN) China's leader condemned what he termed aggressive unilateral actions by powerful nations, calling on "major countries" to uphold international legal standards, local media reported Monday.

Xi Jinping declared: "All countries should respect the development paths chosen by the peoples of other nations, and abide by international law, as well as the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, with major countries taking the lead in doing so."

The Chinese president delivered these remarks during discussions with Micheal Martin, Ireland's prime minister, in Beijing, a news agency reported.

Xi's statements followed a Saturday pre-dawn US military operation targeting Venezuela, which resulted in the seizure of that nation's president and first lady, both subsequently transported to New York.

Xi added: "In a world beset with changes and chaos, unilateral and bullying acts are severely undermining the international order."

Washington executed what it characterized as a "large-scale" strike against Caracas on Saturday, detaining President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse Cilia Flores, who now await prosecution on criminal allegations at a New York courthouse.

The assault claimed approximately 80 lives, The New York Times reported, citing Venezuelan government sources.

Maduro and Flores remain confined at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. They confront US federal indictments connected to narcotics trafficking and purported collaboration with organizations labeled as terrorist groups.

Maduro has rejected these allegations, while authorities in Venezuela's capital Caracas have demanded the couple's immediate release.
